Multiple crews are responding to a fire at the Juniper Ridge Landfill in Old Town Monday night.
Old Town fire department officials say they arrived at around 9 p.m. Since then, crews from Bradley, Alton and Hudson have also arrived.
A large plume of smoke is visible from over the site, but it's unclear if any of the smoke or debris is emitting toxic fumes.
The landfill, which is Maine's largest, is owned by the state and run by Casella.
Last week, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection offered its support for a bill that would temporarily suspend at least one of Maine's environmental laws to allow the landfill to accept some PFAS-laden waste from Massachusetts.
This is a developing story and will be updated as we learn more.
