1 person injured in truck fire that stopped traffic on I-78 (UPDATE)

One person was injured May 5, 2023, in a truck fire on Interstate 78 West near Route 33 in Northampton County.

One person was injured in a truck fire that stopped traffic Friday afternoon on Interstate 78 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania State Police said.

The blaze was reported at about 1 p.m. on I-78 West at mile marker 71, near the Route 33 interchange in Lower Saucon Township.

The operator was injured and was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest for treatment, Trooper Nate Branosky said.

Flames and a thick plume of black smoke could be seen coming from the tractor-trailer on the highway’s shoulder.

All lanes of I-78 West were stopped, as was traffic from Route 33 to I-78 West.

By 1:21 p.m., the shell of the trailer was still smoking, but the flames were out. Traffic was moving on the ramp from Route 33, but still stopped on I-78 West.

By 2 p.m., all lanes of I-78 West were still closed by the fire scene and westbound traffic was backed up to the New Jersey border.
