Pa. bus destroyed by fire while transporting Amish group to a wedding

PENNSDALE — No one was injured when a bus carrying a large Amish group to a wedding in New York State caught fire Thursday morning in Lycoming County.

The driver suspected something was wrong about 4 a.m. as he headed west on Interstate 180, Muncy Twp. Fire Chief Scott Oldweiler said.

He drove onto the Lycoming Mall exit ramp near Pennsdale, where he smelled smoke, the chief said.

It appears the fire began in the brakes or a tire at the rear passenger side of the bus, then spread to the interior, he said.

All 55 people on board were able to get out through the bus door, he said. The bus was destroyed, he said.

UPMC sent its special response bus so with that, as well as Muncy Creek’s ambulance and a passing Wellsboro ambulance, all the bus passengers were kept out of the weather until a second bus arrived, Oldweiler said.

The chief did not know where the Amish were coming from or their destination. State police who investigated the incident did not release any information.
