It took fire crews about an hour to extinguish a fire that broke out at a solid waste landfill near Three Rivers Saturday afternoon.
Black smoke was reported coming from the Waste Management’s Westside Recycling & Disposal Facility on M-60 near Roberts Rd. in Fabius Township around 3:45 p.m. Saturday, according to fire fighters.
Nearly a half acre of waste caught fire before fire crews extinguished the flames within an hour, fire crews said.
Firefighters from the Fabius-Lockport Park Fire Department and the Three Rivers Fire Department responded.
The fire has been safely extinguished and resolved in collaboration with the local Waste Management team and supporting authorities, according to a Waste Management company spokesperson.
The size of the landfill fire is common but it is important to defeat the blaze early to prevent rapid spread, according to fire fighters.
