EUCLID, Ohio (WOIO) - A fatal fire took two lives at Aljer Manor Apartments Sunday morning, according to a press release from Euclid Fire Department (EFD).

EFD responded to the fire on Euclid Avenue around 8:30 a.m.

The release stated they received reports of smoke in the hallways of the three-story, 12-unit building

The Euclid Police Department (EPD) arrived at 8:36 a.m., according to the release, and attempted to enter apartment B3. where two occupants were reported to be inside. Extreme heat and smoke prevented entry, police said.

EFD arrived two minutes later, EPD advising responders about the two occupants possibly still inside.

Firefighters forced entry, with heavy smoke pushing around the door, and reported finding a fire inside near the kitchen.

An unresponsive woman, 31, was found in the living room and removed, and a boy, 5, was found and removed from his bedroom.

Both were transported to area hospitals, and EFD reported both died as a result of their injuries.

All other occupants escaped safely, EFD said.

Additional firefighters responded from South Euclid, Richmond Heights, Wickliffe and Willowick fire departments, and the fire was declared under control at 8:51 a.m., according to the release.

EFD reported one Euclid firefighter sustained a back injury, but refused transport.

An investigation is underway with a focus on the kitchen as the area of origin. EFD said no other apartments were harmed in the fire.
