A dead body was found floating in a Beaufort County retention pond Saturday afternoon, according to the Port Royal Police Department.
Officers received the call and arrived just after 12 p.m., to the pond near Madrid Ave. in Port Royal, according to a news release from the department.
With the fire department's help, first responders recovered the body and took it to the Coroner's Office.
The release said it was an African American male's body wearing dark clothing.
Neighbors told police they saw the man walking around at 8:30 p.m. Friday, near 9th St.
The police department's release said his death appears to be an accident, and not related to a crime nor an animal attack.
Officers have identified the man, but are notifying family before release that name to the public.
