West Carrollton scrap yard fire continues

WEST CARROLLTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Smoke has been billowing from Cohen’s Recycling Center in West Carrollton for several hours after a scrap yard pile caught fire.

According to dispatch, a call came in at 12:30 p.m. for a response to a scrap metal fire at Cohen Recycling Metal Shredders. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time, but several fire departments responded to bring water on scene since no water source is available on site.

Authorities say the fire has been challenging to handle. Since it is a scrap yard, loud booms and explosions have been occurring. With unknown objects in the scrap pile, the team doesn’t necessarily know exactly what they’re uncovering.

“The fire started in a pile of metal, again not sure what the cause is but something is combusted and continues to flare up,” said Officer Chris Fairchild, West Carrollton Police. “We’re trying to get to the source of the fire, they initially had it pinpointed and spread it among small piles to try to minimize the spread but then there was a secondary explosion which restarted everything again, so they had to go back to the beginning and work all of those areas again.”

Upon arrival, our 2 NEWS crew say smoke could be seen 10 miles away.

Farmersville-West Carrollton Road from Infirmary Road and Upper River Road are currently closed. Cohens’ was closed when the fire occurred, however, Officer Fairchild says some employees did come to the scene to help operate equipment.

Several departments responded including Dayton Fire, West Carrollton Fire, West Alexandria Fire, Gratis Fire, Washington Township Fire, Wright Patterson Airforce Base Fire, Germantown Fire, Miami Valley Fire and Farmersville & Jackson Township Fire Departments.
