Lufthansa Boeing 747 bound for Frankfurt makes emergency landing at Boston's Logan Airport
A Lufthansa Boeing 747 plane that was bound for Frankfurt, Germany, from Newark International Airport was forced to turn around and make an unscheduled landing in Boston Monday night after smoke was reported in the cockpit.
According to online flight records, Lufthansa Flight 403 departed Newark Airport just after 8:15 p.m. and was just west of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, when the aircraft turned around and headed toward Boston's Logan International Airport.
A spokesperson for Massachusetts State Police said the crew utilized oxygen masks as the plane diverted to Boston. There were 326 people on board, according to state police.
There were no reports of injuries.
A Lufthansa spokesperson told Simple Flying that the plane was diverted to Boston "due to a technical irregularity."
"As a precautionary measure and in accordance with procedures for a prioritized landing, the flight deck crew declared an air emergency," the written statement said.
The airline said a maintenance team was inspecting the aircraft and passengers were rebooked on alternative flights. "We regret any inconvenience caused, the safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority at all times," the statement said.
