Smoking manhole shuts down busy Boston street, impacting MBTA Green Line service
Smoke streaming from an MBTA manhole in Boston on Friday shut down a busy street in the city and halted some trolley service.
The smoke was reported near 835 Huntington Ave., and the road was closed in both directions for hours. The roadway reopened to traffic and MBTA buses at about 2:30 p.m.
Boston Fire, along with MBTA technicians, opened the manhole cover not to find fire but intense heat.
"There’s no indication there’s a fire down there. There was a good amount of heat. Found the manhole cover with thermo imaging camera was roughly 250 to 300 degrees," said Boston Fire Acting Chief Michael Moran.
Crews eventually started to pump water out from the manhole to get to the source of the problem. It’s unclear where that water is coming from.
The MBTA said Green Line E Branch service is terminating at Brigham Circle because of the power problem. Riders were urged to use use Route 39 for alternate service to Heath Street.
There have been no reports of any injuries.
