A 73-year-old Bernardsville man died from a “medical incident” while hiking Tuesday in the Morristown National Historical Park.

That’s the preliminary finding from the Morris County Medical Examiner, Park Service Chief Ranger Joshua Minnich said on Wednesday.

Authorities have identified the deceased man as Mark Cozin.

For decades, Cozin was a professor of sociology and anthropology at Raritan Valley Community College, where he was active with the faculty union. He held degrees from Lafayette College and the University of London, and was named professor emeritus at Raritan in 2019.  Causes he supported included the Great Swamp Watershed Association.

A hiker on the green trail at Jockey Hollow discovered him around 12:30 pm and called 911, Minnich said in a statement.

Park Service personnel, emergency responders, Harding police and the Morris County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.  The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office is assisting the investigation.

No foul play is suspected, Minnich said.

This story has been updated with the identity and biographical information of the deceased.
