SUV crashes into Fort Myers apartment building; damage forces occupants to vacate residence

An SUV that crashed into a south Fort Myers apartment building forced residents to vacate Monday night, leaving part of the structure unsafe.

South Trail Fire Department units were called to the Woodrose Court multifamily residence in Park Meadows after the vehicle crashed into the first floor of the two-story building.

Fire officials said there were no injuries in the crash but the SUV hit a main load-bearing wall causing the second floor to be deemed structurally unsound.

Firefighters had to shore up the second floor so the vehicle could be removed and building inspectors can assess the damage.

The Florida Gulf Coast to Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross said it was  assisting the couple who lived in the unit.
