10 chickens and a duck survive Fort Gratiot barn fire

A duck and 10 chickens survived a barn fire in Fort Gratiot Wednesday night.

A barn is a total loss after a fire in Fort Gratiot Wednesday. 

A St. Clair County Sheriff deputy was on patrol when he spotted the fire and reported it at about 7:30 p.m. When the deputy reached the house on the property, the barn was covered in flames, St. Clair County Sheriff Mat King said. 

Fort Gratiot Fire Department firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to a nearby barn, he said. 

A duck and 10 chickens survived a barn fire in Fort Gratiot Wednesday night.

No one was home at the time of the fire. There were no injuries. 

Kadance Harris, the sister of the property owner, said all 10 chickens and a duck that were in the barn were able to escape. 

The barn was a total loss, King said. 

It is believed the fire was started by a heater in the barn, he said. 

Clyde and Burtchville fire departments also responded to the scene, as well as Tri-Hospital EMS.
