Tractor trailer catches fire in New London

New London — A tractor trailer caught fire early Monday morning while driving through the city.

About 7:29 a.m., the truck carrying food was traveling on the on-ramp from Briggs Street to North Frontage Road when its tires caught fire, according to the fire department.

Multiple people called 911 to report the flaming truck and firefighters arrived quickly to put out the flames.

Battalion Chief Jeffrey Rheaume said that one of the suspensions above the tires appeared to have failed, causing the tires to rub on the trailer itself and sparking the blaze.

The truck was pulled off the road and onto the ramp so traffic continued as normal. The truck was later towed from the scene.
