2 injured, car set ablaze after manholes explode in Midtown

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Two people were injured and a car was set on fire after two manholes exploded in Midtown on Saturday, according to the FDNY.

The explosions took place a few blocks away from the Queensboro Bridge on First Avenue between East 53rd Street and East 54th Street around 11:12 a.m., officials said.

Firefighters identified three smoking manholes, but only two exploded. Authorities said the explosions were caused by a manhole fire.

A car caught fire as a result of the explosions, according to the FDNY.

Sixty firefighters across 12 units responded to the incident and reportedly got the fire under control by around 12:28 p.m.

Emergency responders brought one person who was seriously injured to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Another person who suffered minor injuries refused medical attention.
