Some mail destroyed in U.S. Postal Service truck fire in Meredith
A U.S. Postal Service truck caught on fire in Meredith on Friday and there's concern about mail that was destroyed.
The truck caught fire on Route 25 near the Hannaford supermarket around 10:50 a.m.
No one was hurt in the fire, but a representative from the U.S. Postal Service said there was some mail damaged.
"Given this is federal property and so on, a private investigation will be completed through them to try to determine the cause," Chief Ken Jones, of the Meredith Fire Department, said.
Jones said the mail delivery person pulled the truck up to a rental property building, picked up and delivered mail and then went back inside the truck.
The driver then tried restarting the mail truck before they noticed flames coming out of the engine compartment area, Jones said. A few seconds after that, the driver reported they exited the vehicle and watched it go up in flames.
Jones said crews arrived about six minutes after the fire was reported and that it took about 20 minutes to extinguish the fire and secure the area.
According to the U.S. Postal Service, officials are assessing the extent of damages to the truck and they said they'll be notifying the customers whose mail was damaged of the next steps moving forward.
