WITH WHAT’S NEXT. MARISSA? I’M STANDING AT THAT SAME SPOT WHERE THE TRUCK CAUGHT ON FIRE THIS MORNING. WE’RE RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET FROM A HANNAFORD GROCERY STORE ALONG ROUTE 25 HERE IN MEREDITH. WE THANKFULLY KNOW NO ONE WAS HURT FROM THIS FIRE, BUT A REPRESENTATIVE FROM THE US POSTAL SERVICE TELLS ME SOME MAIL INSIDE OF THE TRUCK WAS DAMAGED. THIS ALL HAPPENED AROUND 1050 THIS MORNING. I SPOKE WITH THE MEREDITH FIRE CHIEF WHO AND HE TELLS ME THE MAIL DELIVERY PERSON PULLED THE TRUCK INTO A RENTAL PROPERTY BUILDING, PICKED UP AND DELIVERED MAIL, THEN WENT BACK INSIDE THE TRUCK. THE DRIVER THEN TRIED RESTARTING THE MAIL TRUCK WHEN THEY NOTICED FLAMES COMING OUT OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AREA. THE CHIEF SAYS A FEW SECONDS LATER AFTER THAT, THE DRIVER REPORTED THEY EXITED THE VEHICLE AND WATCHED IT GO UP IN FLAMES. HE SAYS CREWS ARRIVED ABOUT SIX MINUTES AFTER THE FIRE WAS REPORTED AND THAT IT TOOK ABOUT 20 MINUTES TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. AND SECURE THE AREA. THE US POSTAL SERVICE SAYS THEY’RE ASSESSING THE EXTENT OF DAMAGES TO THE TRUCK AND THEY SAY THERE’LL BE NOTIFYING THE CUSTOMERS WHOSE MAIL WAS DAMAGED OF NEXT STEPS MOVING FORWARD. GIVEN THIS IS FEDERAL PROPERTY AND SO ON, A PRIVATE INVESTIGATION WILL BE COMPLETED THROUGH THEIR THROUGH THEM TO DETERMINE TRY TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE. AND AGAIN, NO ONE WAS HURT OR INJURED FROM THIS FIRE. THE FIRE CHIEF AGAIN SAYS THAT THE US POSTAL SERVICE WILL BE HANDLING THE INVESTIGATION INTO THE EXACT CAUSE OF THE FIRE BECAUSE THE TRUCK WA

A U.S. Postal Service truck caught on fire in Meredith on Friday and there's concern about mail that was destroyed.The truck caught fire on Route 25 near the Hannaford supermarket around 10:50 a.m.No one was hurt in the fire, but a representative from the U.S. Postal Service said there was some mail damaged."Given this is federal property and so on, a private investigation will be completed through them to try to determine the cause," Chief Ken Jones, of the Meredith Fire Department, said.Jones said the mail delivery person pulled the truck up to a rental property building, picked up and delivered mail and then went back inside the truck.The driver then tried restarting the mail truck before they noticed flames coming out of the engine compartment area, Jones said. A few seconds after that, the driver reported they exited the vehicle and watched it go up in flames.Jones said crews arrived about six minutes after the fire was reported and that it took about 20 minutes to extinguish the fire and secure the area. According to the U.S. Postal Service, officials are assessing the extent of damages to the truck and they said they'll be notifying the customers whose mail was damaged of the next steps moving forward.
