LONG BEACH (CNS) - Long Beach police Wednesday were investigating the death of an inmate who was found unresponsive inside a cell at the city jail.

Officers conducting a routine inmate safety check around 4 p.m. Tuesday found 28-year-old Steven Alfred Price unresponsive inside his jail cell, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Paramedics were called and attempted to resuscitate Price, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Long Beach homicide detectives will investigate the death, as required by protocol whenever there's an in-custody death, police said.

The Los Angeles County coroner's office was conducting an independent investigation to determine the cause of death.

According to the police department, LBPD officers arrested Price around 10:45 a.m. Monday for an alleged parole violation. No force was used during the arrest, police said.

Price told the arresting officers he was homeless.
