Smoky truck fire closes part of I-78 West in Lehigh County (UPDATE)

Authorities closed part of Interstate 78 due to a smoky truck fire April 4, 2023, on the westbound side near Route 309 in Lehigh County.

A smoky truck fire closed part of Interstate 78 Tuesday morning in Lehigh County.

The fire was reported at 6:43 a.m. on I-78 West at mile marker 52 near the split with Route 309 and the Route 22 interchange, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation reported.

The tractor-trailer was hauling garbage, Trooper Nate Branosky said. No injuries were reported and the fire was only affecting the trailer, he said.

Initially traffic was getting by, but a little after 8 a.m., authorities announced I-78 West was being closed in Upper Macungie Township and traffic diverted onto Route 309.

As of 12:30 p.m., the westbound side of the highway was still closed as crews lifted the trailer in an attempt to extinguish the still-smoking trash.

I-78 East was still open to traffic.
