Bus fire closes US 40 just east of Hayden on Tuesday (with video)

U.S. Highway 40 was closed in both directions one mile east of Hayden on Tuesday due to a Steamboat Springs Transit bus that caught fire.

According to a news release issued by the city, the fire started around 4 p.m. as the SST regional coach was headed west toward Craig on U.S. Highway 40. The fire started in the rear-wheel area. The driver pulled the bus over, and the 13 passengers and driver exited the vehicle.

“I made sure everyone got off safe, and then I went back for my skis,” said Phillipe Saumier, a passenger on the bus who also captured a video of the fire.

Another bus was dispatched to the scene to provide shelter for the passengers, but everyone on the coach had found alternative rides to their destinations, according to the news release. Steamboat Springs City Manager Gary Suiter also confirmed there were no injuries associated with the incident.

U.S. 40 reopened to alternating traffic in the late-afternoon, though traffic remained backed up in both directions into the evening. At 7 p.m., a Routt County Alert went out saying the highway had reopened in both directions.

According to the news release, Steamboat Springs Transit is working to keep the regional service between Steamboat and Craig running three time a day on its regular schedule despite one coach being inoperable.

Colorado State Patrol is investigating the fire.
