A fire that spread rapidly through a field in Forest is contained, according to fire officials.
According to the Forest Volunteer Fire Department, they got the call around 10:30 this morning for a fire in a field off Milky Way Lane.
When they arrived on the scene, crews found a tractor in the field on fire with about two acres of brush also burning.
FVFD Chief Monty Coleman says because of the wind, the fire spread rapidly and about 100 hay bales caught fire.
"They were dry, and it honestly it looked like somebody was just pouring gasoline walking down in front of the fire, that's how fast the fire was moving down the hay bales," Coleman said.
In an update posted to social media just after 3:00 p.m., the fire department said the fire was contained but crews are still operating. They said a total of 40 acres burned.
Both the tractor and a garage were lost to the flames. Two barns were also damaged, but the house on the farm is okay. There were no injuries reported.
Coleman said the firefighters never gave up.
"The fire was so fast moving. They kept in the fight. They ate a lot of smoke and tried to save what we could," Coleman said.
Chief Coleman said the Bedford County Fire Marshal's Office will be investigating how that fire started from the tractor.
FVFD said there were 9 fire departments on the scene, including Bedford, Big Island, Boonsboro, Huddleston, Saunders, Moneta, and the Department of Forestry. FVFD said about 50 firefighters were working to tackle this fire.
