Investigation continues after overnight box truck fire shuts down westbound 696

FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) - A major expressway is reopening after being shut down following a box truck fire overnight.

The fire occurred on westbound 696 at Orchard Lake Road around 2 a.m. Monday, authorities said.

Unconfirmed reports say a Ryder truck was the vehicle that caught fire.

Farmington Hills Police said that the freeway is partially reopened while the cleanup wraps up.

Officials recommend taking westbound 12 Mile Road as an alternate. Drivers can get on M5 which will allow them to get on westbound 96 or southbound 275, bypassing 696.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
