Engine of MSAD 44 school bus catches fire in Buxton

Fire officials said no students were on the bus at the time of the incident. Only the driver and a mechanic were on board.

BUXTON, Maine — Shortly after 9 a.m. Thursday, Buxton Fire & Rescue members were testing hydrants with Engine 422 when they came across an MSAD 44 school bus on Joy Valley Road with heavy smoke and flames coming from the engine, the fire department said in a Facebook post.

"The crew immediately informed dispatch over the radio before the bus operator had finished his call with 911," the post said.

Several additional fire engines responded to the scene to assist. One engine successfully deployed a hand line and extinguished the flames from a distance while a fire lieutenant operated the pump, placing his self-contained breathing apparatus on to safely approach the fire for further extinguishment, according to the post.

Fire officials said no students were on the bus at the time of the incident. Only the driver and a mechanic were on board.

No injuries were reported.
