Truck fire, fuel spill slowed traffic on Interstate 81; clean up underway

Brewerton, N.Y. — A fuel spill is being cleaned up on Interstate 81 after a vehicle fire Thursday morning near Brewerton.

At 4:36 a.m. someone called 911 to report the cab of a tractor-trailer on fire on Interstate 81 south, according to dispatches from the Onondaga County 911 Center. The tractor-trailer cab was not attached to anything, dispatchers said.

The driver was able to get out safely, said Thomas Newton, a spokesperson for the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation responded to clean up about 20 gallons of fuel spilled after the fire, Newton said.

The truck fire was near Exit 31 (Route 11, Bartell Road, Brewerton).

At one point two of the three southbound lanes were shut down. All lanes have seen reopened, Newton said.

It is unknown how the fire started, Newton said.
