A swimmer who was pulled from the ocean off a beach in Monmouth County last week died in the hospital Thursday, police said.

Colin Martin, 19, of New York, was swimming with a 17-year-old New York resident on July 7 when they both became distressed as they tried to swim back to the shore of the Kent Avenue beach in Bradley Beach shortly before 6 p.m., Bradley Beach Police Chief Leonard Guida said.

Multiple rescue agencies were able bring the 17-year-old swimmer to shore, but Martin went under the waves for about 20 minutes before he was found and pulled out, Guida said.

“The medics worked on him and were able to get a pulse back,” Guida told NJ Advance Media last week.

Martin was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition until he died Thursday, authorities said. The other swimmer was also taken there but was later released.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family of Colin Martin,” the department wrote Thursday afternoon in a Facebook post.

The beach was not guarded at the time as lifeguards leave around 5 p.m. on weekdays, Guida said.
