Bend firefighters were dispatched to an RV fire this morning along Stevens Road, just east of 27th Street. When crews arrived just after 3:30 a.m., they found a motorhome completely engulfed.
Firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading to nearby power poles and brush. Officials say no one was found around the motorhome at the time.
During the investigation, biological remains were found in the motorhome. Due to the extent of damage, darkness, and location of the remains, a death investigation was commenced.
Bend Police Department was called to determine who or what was inside. After the occupant of the motorhome returned and the sun came up, it was determined the remains were the occupant's large dog who died in the fire.
Officials say the fire appears to have started from a propane-fired heater left unattended in the camper, and it is not clear if the heater malfunctioned or if something ignited on or near the heater.
The motorhome and contents are a complete loss.
