Missing swimmer in Atlantic Beach identified, drowned while attempting to save others

The swimmer, a man in his 20s, was found Wednesday morning after being reported missing in the ocean Tuesday night.

ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. — The swimmer who went missing in the ocean at Atlantic Beach near Ahern Street Tuesday night, was found dead Wednesday morning, according to the Atlantic Beach Police Department.

The man's body, identified as 19-year-old Mykhailo Myroshnychenko, was recovered just after 2 a.m. in the surf just north of 19th Street in Atlantic Beach. A member of the Neptune Beach Police Department found the teen floating close to shore.

On Tuesday, Myroshnychenko was last seen entering the Atlantic Ocean at approximately 8 p.m. while attempting to assist an adult male and two children who were struggling in a rip current, the media release states. Police say the adult male and children made it safely back to shore.

Crews from the Neptune Beach Police Department, Atlantic Beach Police Department, Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Aviation Unit, United States Coast Guard, Neptune Beach Ocean Rescue, Atlantic Beach Ocean Rescue and Jacksonville Beach Ocean Rescue, arrived at scene and deployed assets to begin searching for the missing swimmer throughout the night.
